Guatemala Journal Entry for 6/24/01
Woke up early, drove over, ate quickly with the other guys
the whole day was pretty vigorous and consisted of mixing
concrete on the ground and in a hand mixer in front of the
church, shoveling the concrete into metal gallon buckets,
passing them up the scaffolds, over the rooftop and dumping
them into place. The passing line started as a large loop
and eventually ended up as a couple single lines up the
scaffolding. I started in the front on top of the roof
(the person who dumped the buckets), and rotated a few other
positions when the roof no longer needed a full line. I
gave my gloves to another hard worker who lived there, so
my hands were all kinds of messed up when I was done. We
used metal buckets, and the concrete eventually hardened on
the handles and the bottom, which meant sharp edges when
handling and dumping them. I didn't stop until the job was
completely done; I wanted to put whole self into the process
since everyone came from afar to help.
When we returned, I showered, had Pat care for my hands, and hit the sack. I was down and out from illness the next couple days from
both concrete and food poisoning.
Unfortunately I didn't get to say goodbye to the kids the following night.
