Guatemala Journal Entry for 6/21/01
Woke up at 6:06am, having to go to the bathroom (trying to go
#2 for the 1st time here)
Got coffee again – this time 2 cups at 1.5 Quetzals apiece...
it was 4.5Q apiece in Duncan Donuts, so I couldn’t pass up the bargain
Devotional was good – sharing Christ’s suffering: criticism
vs compassion (Phil 3:10-11, Rom 8:17)
The drive over this morning was the same; very bumpy, long,
and poverty stricken. I felt a bit more blessed at being born
in the US where poverty at least meant you had a place to stay.
Breakfast – corn flakes, bread, eggs, beans
I had a little time to play with the kids, but no hacky sack
because it was raining. We played some motorcycle game that
was much like the game chicken played in water (with a person
on your shoulders), except the motorcycle game had a person
in front too. Ben and I made up some form of hop scotch game.
We drew the game in the dirt street by using rebar pieces from
the construction site, and threw rocks on squares so kids
couldn’t jump there. Soccer came later...
Worked by carrying heavy lumber, hauling rock and rebar,
filling sand bags for stream redirection, etc
Lunch – chicken, fried rice, fajitas, chiltepe, pinapple … sat next to Jennifer (child)
Played hacky sack with kids, talked to others; more games and learning Spanish.
Bent some rebar with Lori and Ruth because the guys wouldn’t put me to work at the construction site
Played soccer with the kids
Picked construction equipment and materials up, so it wouldn’t get stolen that night
stapled some of the crafts for the kids and taught them to handshake
When we returned, I sprinted with Jim down the hall in order to get to the shower first… ran past Steve Reed.
Went to a chicken food chain to hear Auto give his testimony. His daughters – Victoria, Loidy, Ruth (21 yr old hottie) – sat amongst us as well.
Leah Ann asked about moving to Portland, OR because I had discussed part of my life with her today.
