Guatemala Journal Entry for 6/20/01
Got up at 6:30am… devotion at 7:15 and left at 8; the devotion
was encouraging us to tell our story
Drive over – kept all windows shut until we got into the country
side so we could actually breathe
Accident on road made us about 20 min late
Breakfast – beans, banana pancakes, bread
I washed dishes afterwards with Jason and Laurie C.
Played hacky sack with the boys
Didn’t get to help much on the roof today before lunch since I was playing too much ;)
Practiced more Spanish with the ladies hangin around cooking, and with the kids
Lunch – pinapple, tortilla, fried rice, beef (stewed), bread
Didn’t do dishes as assigned because Marvi and Juanita took Pat, LeahAnn and I to the central market (looking for a hat for Claudio). The market trip was a great experience… I talked to Marvin a lot (studying to be a doctor, age 25)
Came back to see the VBS puppet show
After working on the roof a couple hours, I played hacky sack with the kids and showed them my 2 photos I brought from the US
Upon returning, Jim, Gary, Mark and I went to withdraw about 4,000 from the bank. Gary and I hid in the coffee shop while they went to the bank next door. We ordered coffee, and the whole ordering experience was kinda fun. The lady spoke really fast but I kinda knew what she was saying… loose translation “for here or to go”
The night conversation was Steve Reed’s devotional, which was awesome
That spawned some personal conversations on how we can take this experience back… I talked with with Eric, Rachel, Claudio and Jim
Hit the sack at 11:05pm.
