Guatemala Journal Entry for 6/19/01
I went to bed at 11:11 last night woke up at 5:50am to Claudio’s raptor noise
Devotional and talk until 8am, while the guys got another Hertz van since ours broke down
Had coffee from the hotel – different taste, but definitely awesome
On the drive over: the sides of the road had very deep trenches for rainy season, and some holes in the streets were big enough for a small car to fall into
locals were so friendly
Breakfast – fried bananas, beans, eggs, bread
Helped Claudio sleeve the concrete columns that weren’t filled all the way; we used scrap wood for the work and talked to Alvaro over the course of that work (he was a 20 yr old that played drums at the church service)
Lunch – fruit, boiled chicken, fried rice, chile sauce, corn tortillas (bread)
I did dishes with Jason and Lori A. Alan and another child help later
The kids had lots of fun with the little things – soap bubbles, hacky sack, etc
When we played hacky sac (called “technical” there), the kids understood what I explained even though I couldn’t speak perfect Spanish
I entertained the ladies (who prepared all the meals and cleaned up thereafter) and they joked with me about a few things that I couldn’t understand. One of the things was calling me Cristobal Columbus, but I told them that I was only 24 and so wasn’t old enough to be him. They told someone else that they like me because I have so much energy and because even though I couldn’t speak Spanish well, I sure tried.
I quizzed the kids on English and they helped me on Spanish. It was truly fun.
I worked on top of the new church structure, with some of the rebar. I remember mentioning something about photos, and then all the kids wanted to see whatever it was that I was talking about…
It’s not safe on the streets here at night, even if we travel in a pack, which translates into me being able to find some real sleep tonight… sweet!
[slept from 10:05 to 6:30 and dreamed about dogs climbing trees after me, and car chases]
